MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has pledged to save the country’s oil sector just like former Mexican President Lazaro Cardenas, who headed the country from 1934 to 1940, had done.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In March 1938, Cardenas announced the nationalization of\u00a0the oil industry, and only in\u00a02013, the Mexican Congress approved an energy reform opening the oil sector to\u00a0private companies, including the foreign ones.<\/p>\n

“We will produce oil because oil and gas production has been decreasing since\u00a0the beginning of\u00a0the energy reform. We will save\u00a0the oil industry like\u00a0Gen. Cardenas did in\u00a01938,” Lopez Obrador posted on\u00a0Twitter late on\u00a0Sunday.<\/p>\n

In September, Lopez Obrador, who won the election in\u00a0July and will assume office on\u00a0December 1, pledged that crude oil production would increase up\u00a0to 2.6 million barrels per day from\u00a0the current level of\u00a01.8 million barrels per day by\u00a0the end of\u00a0his six-year-long administration.<\/p>\n

In August, Pemex, Mexico’s major oil and gas company, produced oil at\u00a0the average level of\u00a01,816 million barrels per day, which is a 5.9 percent decrease year-on-year, and a 28 percent decrease compared with\u00a0the notch registered in\u00a0August 2013.<\/p>\n
