New opportunities in Mexican maritime transport

Graciela Álvarez Hoth, General Director of NRGI Broker, a company specializing in the management of large risks in the Mexican maritime sector, explains the new maritime routes in Mexico.

Short Sea Shipping is one of the federal government’s strategic projects, aiming to provide an alternative for cargo transport and boost the development and competitiveness of trade and services to foster economic growth in Mexico. By the end of 2022, the Secretariat of the Navy will present this project to the Chamber of Deputies. The Secretariat has committed to optimizing and modernizing the ports and customs facilities under its jurisdiction, promoting multimodal transport throughout the country.

The goal is to elevate our country’s trade to the highest levels of international efficiency. This will be achieved by establishing synergies among Mexican shipping companies with vessels flying the national flag, cargo owners, and business and government organizations. This important business activity contributes significantly to the growth of the Gross Domestic Product, and therefore the participation of private companies operating in coastal shipping is vital.

These companies are making significant investments to maintain and modernize the fleet of vessels that provide support services, both to the substantive work of the oil industry, as well as to the rest of the multimodal transport activities of cargo and passengers, developing maritime highways as an alternative to land transport.

As a result of the investment and effort being made by all participants in this industry, today more than ever, risk management is an essential tool that forms part of the regulation of this entire chain of activities and operations, as it allows for the identification, analysis, control, financing, and management of risks associated with maritime transport, crew, environmental damage, cargo, and port activities.

Among all the players in this important maritime industry, NRGI Broker actively participates with a cross-cutting service thanks to our experience and specialization in risk management and comprehensive insurance programs, which are fundamental to the success of different business activities.
